Classes are taught at the J. Rome Gallery: 211 E. Sherman Ave. Coeur d’ Alene, Idaho. We only host in-person classes.

Courses will take place once per week for 6 weeks from 6pm to 8pm.

Each course, regardless of level, has an enrollment fee of $400. This includes 6 2-hour sessions. Course materials are included. Course fee will be payed online before the first meeting.

Register for an Upcoming Class
This is our class for continuing students who have taken our beginning class. In our class meetings, we’ll dive into two to three multi-day paintings to deepen our understanding of oil paint principles. Students will be given more creative freedom and encouraged to make their own stylistic choices. We’ll work in a small group of up to 6 students which allows plenty of time for one-on-one instruction and creative guidance tailored to your individual projects.
Here is where you’ll start your exploration of oil paint. In this course, we familiarize ourselves with the basic properties and processes of oil painting. Learn from professional artist and gallery owner, Jaime Rome Crain, in an approachable, small-group environment. Each session takes place in Jaime’s inviting downtown gallery space surrounded by current exhibitions of unique artwork. You’ll be walked through both casual exercises and multi-day painting projects so that you’ll walk away with work you’re proud of. This is the perfect class for absolute beginners and for those with existing art practices who have very little or no experience with oils.
what to expect from your first class:
Beginning Oil Painting Class Schedule
WEEK 1Introduction to the properties of oil paint, a color theory mini-course, and a quick hands-on color study that will help us get familiar with putting paint on canvas.
WEEK 2Lesson on still life, painting from direct observation, and the importance of a developed underpainting with an emphasis on value and form.
WEEK 3Further development of our still life paintings using a pre-mixed palette of your choosing.
WEEK 4Introductory lesson on drawing/painting from a photograph with methods for representing accurate proportions.
WEEK 5Finalize a color palette of your choosing and begin blocking in color for final painting. Explore a creative direction of your own with individual guidance.
WEEK 6Further refine final oil painting with group discussion and feedback from your instructor and peers.
